Understanding tax
TaxAid is a UK charity providing free tax advice to people who cannot afford to pay a professional adviser. The service is independent and confidential.

Who can we help?

How can we help you?

We can help you understand your rights and responsibilities under the UK tax system, including the information HM Revenue and Customs have sent you about your tax, on matters such as PAYE, self assessment, tax credits and allowances, and tax for the self-employed.

We can also help you if you are worried because you are the subject of an HM Revenue and Customs enquiry; you cannot pay your tax and may be facing legal proceedings for non-payment; you think you should get a tax refund; or you feel you are being unfairly treated by the HM Revenue and Customs. All TaxAid advisers are qualified tax professionals.

What else do we do?

How is TaxAid funded?

Finding funding is a constant challenge, given that often people do not realise that tax can be a problem for those on low incomes. So we depend largely on the generosity of people in the tax profession who give their time, money and expertise. We also organise professional conferences to earn some core funding with the support of top tax specialists who give their expertise at no charge.

TaxAid has been granted funding from the Big Lottery Fund and from the London councils for advice services in London.TaxAid is generously supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the Friends Provident Foundation for developing advice services in the West Midlands.
